Areas of Treatment
Aphasia
Aphasia is a language disorder that can affect a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, and/or write. Aphasia is typically caused by a stroke or brain injury. Aphasia does not affect intelligence but can make it challenging to express thoughts or comprehend language.
Cognition
Cognitive-communication disorders are often caused by stroke, brain injury, mild-cognitive impairment, or other neurological conditions. When one’s cognitive-communication skills are impaired, they may experience difficulty with thinking, concentration, memory, problem solving, or organizational skills.
Speech
Motor speech impairments involve difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for speech. These impairments may be caused by muscle weakness (dysarthria) or difficulty with motor planning (apraxia of speech). Causes often include neurological conditions like stroke, traumatic brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease.
Swallowing
Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) make it difficult to eat, drink, or safely swallow. Symptoms may include coughing during meals, the feeling of food being stuck in the throat, or frequent respiratory infections (i.e. pneumonia). Speech therapy offers personalized assessment and treatment to improve swallow function, enhance safety, and support quality of life.
